GLOSSARY
A6-->A0
Series of standard paper formats.
Starting with the basic format (A0), each new format is exactly
half of the previous one.
A0: 84 x 118.8 cm
A1: 59,4 x 84 cm
A2: 42 x 59,4 cm
A3: 29,7 x 42 cm
A4: 21 x 29,7 cm
A5: 14,8 x 21 cm
A6: 10,5 x 14,8 cm
Bit
Basic unit of a digital system.
Bitmap (File)
Graphic file comprised of a number
of dots per inch.
CD-Photo
Compact disk designed by Kodak and
used as a medium for storing images.
CD-ROM
Compact Disk - Read only memory.
Storage disk that can hold up to 625 Mb of images, text or sound
that can be read by a Macintosh or PC computer. It is only
possible to read the data. The data can be neither erased nor
modified.
CMYK
Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK.
The four basic colours used in the quadrichrome process.
Databank
Vast store of data concerning a given
theme allowing rapid consultation.
Digitization
Operation that transforms a physical
image into binary language, only usable on a computer. Conversion
of an analogue signal into a digital signal.
dpi
Dot per inch.
Graphic unit defining the resolution of an image. The greater
the number of dots, the higher the definition.
Ektachrome
Type of transparency film manufactured
by Kodak. Often referred to by the abbreviation "Ekta".
In current usage: any transparency.
Encapsulation
Welded plastic covering on both sides
of a paper print.
EPS
Encapsulated PostScript Format.
File format containing a description of the content in the PostScript
language. This format is used to conserve and manipulate a bitmap
image.
Format
Coding to save a file.
Fujichrome
Type of transparency manufactured by
Fuji.
Image Vectoring
Transformation of a bitmap image into
an image made up of vectors. This operation also applies to fonts
that are converted into vector images.
Ink jet (printing)
Printing by spraying micro-quantities
of ink.
Input
Any opaque or transparent document
(photo, transparency, drawing, etc.) or any digital file (scan,
digital photo, etc.) from which we can work (exposure, retouching,
printing, etc.)
See also Output.
ISDN
Integrated Services Digital Network.
A range of digital transmission services.
Mb
Abbreviation of Megabyte..
1 Mb = one million bytes.
Output
- Exposure of pixels onto photosensitive
film using an imaging unit to produce a transparency.
- Any film (negative or positive),
any print (inkjet, laser print) or digital file which is the final
result of our work and that is delivered to you.
Overhead
Film destined for overhead projection.
Pantone
Reference system for selecting a colour
shade defined by its identity number.
Pixel
Picture element.
The smallest element of a digital image.
A pixel can be represented by a single bit (black and white)
or more often by 8, 16 or 32 bits.
PostScript
Page description language developed
by Adobe.
A PostScript file is a text file (ASCII) containing all of the
information required for printing on a special printer designed
for this purpose when making a backup.
Resolution
The smallest distance between two points,
determining the degree of definition of an exposure.
RIP
Raster Image Processor.
Electronic printing process that transforms the data sent to
the imaging unit into the points used for exposure.
RGB
Red, Green, Blue.
Colour composition process based on the principle of admixing
colours.
Scanner
A device used to digitize a document,
i.e. to read it point by point in order to generate a bitmap
file.
Silhouetting
Technique used to isolate a part of
an image (e.g.: from a background).
Slide
Transparency 24x36 mm set in a frame.
In general, any 24x36 mm transparency to be used for projection
or printing.
Sublimation
(printing process)
Thermal printing process based on the
transfer or colorants.
Tiff
Tagged Image File Format.
Standard format for recording bitmap files. Most scanners and
graphics software can produce Tiff files.
Weight
1024 bits = 1 byte
1024 bytes = 1 Kb (kilobytes)
1024 Kb = 1 Mb (megabytes)
1024 Mb = 1 Gb (gigabytes)
1024 Gb = 1 Tb (terabytes)
1024 Tb = 1 Pb (petabytes)
